How Can Online Therapy Help Me?

Online Therapy falls under the umbrella of telehealth services. While physicians use telehealth for medical consultations, psychotherapists can offer individual, couples, and family therapy through teletherapy. Telehealth and online therapy provide convenient, safe access to our services.

Much like in-person therapy, online therapy can assist with a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Managing feelings of sadness, depression, or hopelessness
  • Stress management
  • Coping with anxiety or worry
  • Handling mood swings
  • Addressing relationship issues and loneliness
  • Dealing with sleep difficulties
  • Enhancing relaxation and focus
  • Transgender
  • Building motivation and achieving goals
  • Grieving and coping with loss (loss of a loved one, career, etc.)
  • Trauma

You and your therapist can collaborate to make progress towards your objectives, enhance your quality of life, and boost your overall well-being. At Austin Counseling and Trauma Specialists, our team of skilled therapists is dedicated to supporting you during challenging times.

How Does Online Therapy Work?

The specifics of online therapy delivery can vary among practices. At Austin Counseling and Trauma Specialists, we employ a secure, fully confidential, and HIPAA-compliant video platform via our practice management system. Our online therapy clients can participate in sessions remotely from anywhere, using any device like a smartphone, laptop, desktop, or tablet.

Online therapy sessions have the same duration as regular in-person sessions and can be scheduled for your convenience. You can connect with your therapist during our regular hours, all within the comfort and safety of your home or office.

You don't need advanced technology to engage in online therapy; a reliable internet connection and a device with a webcam (smartphone or computer) suffice. If desired, using headphones can enhance privacy. Your therapist will send you an email link to join your session. When your appointment time arrives, simply click the link to access your video session.

If you encounter any difficulties accessing your session or are unsure about the process, don't hesitate to contact us. Our team is here to guide you through the steps and provide troubleshooting assistance. You can also download a quick guide to get started with online therapy.

Does Online Therapy Work for Children?

Yes! Most children adapt well to video sessions and are often excited about the extra screen time. However, not all children may be suitable for online therapy sessions. Contact us to determine if your child is a good fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Therapy (FAQ)

Is online therapy confidential?

Absolutely. Austin Counseling and Trauma Specialists use the highest standard of technology to ensure our services are safe, secure, and HIPAA-compliant.

What if I feel uncomfortable on video chat?

It's common to feel a bit awkward or anxious when trying online therapy for the first time, but it usually becomes more comfortable with experience. If video doesn't work for you, phone sessions may be an alternative option.

I don't have a private place to talk – what should I do?

Feel free to reach out to us for assistance in finding a suitable space for online therapy. For example, some clients choose to have their sessions in their car or use headphones while taking a walk for added privacy.

What if I try online therapy and it isn't working for me?

That's perfectly okay! People have varying preferences for online therapy, and we encourage everyone to give it a try to see if it suits them. You might even find it more appealing than in-person sessions.

How does billing work, and does insurance cover online therapy?

Billing for online therapy and Telehealth at Austin Counseling and Trauma Specialists follows the same process as in-person therapy. Please note that we do not work directly with insurance companies, which allows us to offer higher quality care and maintain a higher standard of client confidentiality. If you wish to pursue partial reimbursement through your PPO plan, let us know, and we'll provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance provider. More information about insurance can be found at the bottom of this page.

Do you offer assessments via Telehealth?

We can provide some assessment services remotely through Telehealth and online therapy. Many personality tests and behavior inventories (e.g., for ADHD, anxiety, and depression) can be completed online. For performance-based testing (such as neuropsychological or academic achievement testing), please contact us to discuss available options.

What if I encounter technical issues before or during the session?

As soon as you notice technical problems, contact us by phone or email – we are here to assist you. In most cases, technical issues can be resolved by refreshing your screen, closing internet tabs, and ensuring that your camera and headphones are functioning correctly.
